Veneajelu: My First Experience on a Scenic Boat Trip

7 天前 评论(1)
When I was first introduced to the term veneajelu, I had no idea what it meant. After that, I understood that it is way more than words true Finnish name is just a boat trip, literally. But a single veneajelu hides the beauty of the meeting. A veneajelu is not just a water ride one can get but it is a way of getting in touch with nature and appreciating nature at a slower pace.

I made up my mind to experiment with this experience and I ended up changing the whole my approach to travel.

Thinking of My Veneajelu

Going down on a boat for a slow and lovely berg across a small lake eluded me as an indescribable sensation of being excited and scared simultaneously. I packed my bags with just a few essentials: sunscreen, water, a notebook, and my natural inquisitiveness. A veneajelu is not like air traveling or driving; it doesn't require one to stick to a strict schedule. You are welcomed to let time go and hang on the rhythm of the waves.

What Made the Veneajelu Unforgettable

Right from the start, the experience was beyond mere movement. The water's gentle tapping against the boat, the cool air that I breathed in, and the view of the sunlit horizons all worked together to bring about serenity.
This is what was most lucid to me:

  • Silence with substance: The silence was not empty but seemed alive with the absence of city noise.
  • Connection with nature: Birds flying overhead, trees lining the shore, and the reflection of clouds on the water.
  • Freedom: The boat was a microcosm where the only thing that I was being asked to do was experience the now.

Symbolic Meaning of Veneajelu
Veneajelu in Finland and Nordic countries is not about fun only but it is tradition. Family faring vesels are used as a means of reuniting during the hot season in summer. Evening rides are taken by friends to gaze upon and enjoy the sunset. To a great extent, the veneajelu is a transitional bridge between the modern lifestyle and the ageless sceneries.
I was first off the water with the local fishermen, and that was when I knew it was not only an activity but a complete lifestyle.

Lessons I Learned on the Water
I could have never imagined that spending a lot of time on a boat would teach me so much:

  • Patience is truly a skill: You can't speed up a veneajelu. Nature is the one who decides the speed.
  • The smallest things really matter: A tiny wave on the water or a light breeze are enough to change everything.
  • Being present is better than being distracted: Since there were no constant notifications, my concentration was completely back to where I was.

Why Veneajelu Appeals to Travelers
Though global tourism is getting more and more stressful, veneajelu keeps its position as a remedy. It is the opposite of hectic, slow, and deeply personal. I felt it was like uncovering a serene luxury: the luxury of stillness.
Nowadays, travelers may be caught up with visiting the most famous places and taking pictures. On the other hand, a veneajelu gives the audience something much more difficult to capture but longer living—an experience engraved in their memory rather than in their camera roll.

Closing Thoughts
My first boat trip showed me that travel doesn't always have to be quick or impressive. At times, the most impactful travel experiences are those that are silent and require one to slow down. I found serenity, loveliness, and relationships on the water - these three things that seemed to be more valuable than hectic tourist spots.
Through my boat trip, I learned how to see more than just the trip. It was a symbol of tranquility for me to bring the calmness of the trip into my daily routine.

Wow, that sounds lovely!  I've always wanted to try a veneajelu.  What a beautiful way to connect with nature.  Did you take any photos?  I'd love to see them!
