Documentary 'The Fall of Northern Myanmar's Cyber Scam Empire' Episode 1 Airs: Selling Kidneys to Repay Debt, Cash Growing Mold, and the Inside Story of the 'October 20' Shooting Exposed On October 5, the first episode of the documentary 'The Fall of Northern Myanmar's Cyber Scam Empire,' co-produced by the Ministry of Public Security and China Media Group, aired under the title 'Drawing the Sword.' It focused on revealing how cyber scams in northern Myanmar went from frenzied expansion to being comprehensively dismantled. The documentary revealed that at the peak of the cyber scam operations in northern Myanmar, the Mong Pawk area of 'Wa State' alone had 265 scam compounds, with nearly 60,000 people involved in scam operations. In 2021, a man surnamed Tang crossed the border illegally into a scam compound in 'Wa State.' Due to poor performance, he was forced to sign an IOU for 70,000 yuan, then was resold among multiple compounds and subjected to prolonged beatings. Only when his wounds became infected and he could no longer walk did the scam company propose that he sell a kidney to repay his debt. After a successful match, he was taken for surgery. Meanwhile, the scam ringleaders amassed enormous wealth through fraud. Bao Yanban had so much cash at home that it had to be taken out to dry to prevent it from growing mold. Group members even said that a guard once stole about 10 million yuan, and he never even noticed. On September 26, 2023, Chinese police arrested Bao Junfeng, deputy commander of the 'United Wa State Army' and commander of the 318th Brigade, along with members of his gang in Kunming, and seized large quantities of jewelry, luxury watches, and luxury cars from his residence. On October 20 of the same year, a shooting occurred during the transfer of personnel at a compound controlled by the Ming family, leaving 4 dead and 4 injured. Chinese police subsequently entered locations including the Wohu Villa, the 'Red House,' and the Donghu Villa in Kokang to gather evidence, and found burial sites. All 3 of the deceased were determined by forensic examination to have died from gunshot wounds. Afterward, key members of the Ming family were arrested one after another. On January 30, 2024, Bai Suocheng, Bai Yingcang, Wei Huairen, Liu Zhengxiang, Liu Zhengmao, Xu Laofa, and others were transferred to the Chinese side and escorted back to China, dealing a heavy blow to the 'Four Great Families' criminal syndicates that had entrenched themselves in Kokang for years.

If a young person in your family has been lured away with promises of a high-paying job, call the police first and contact the Chinese embassy or consulate in Myanmar. Do not transfer money to pay a ransom on your own.

The 265 dens and nearly 60,000 people mentioned in the film—are these peak estimates or verified figures? If the statistical scope and timeframe could be clarified, the discussion would be more solid. In addition, it would be worth following up on Tang Moufeng, who sold a kidney to repay debts: whether he was saved after the surgery, and whether the case has entered judicial proceedings.

What stands out most is that a guard stole roughly ten million yuan without anyone noticing, which shows the cash was so abundant it was out of control. What ordinary people can do is remind those around them who want to go abroad to make quick money to first check up on the employer's background.

Fraud isn't an inherent label attached to any particular region. Poverty and governance vacuums are the soil in which it spreads. Beyond cracking down, we also need to look at local livelihoods.
