Sung Yun-hua Borrows Qipao to Take Home, Hides in Her Room to Get Into Character

The film "The Age of Farewell" is adapted from the novel of the same name by Malaysian author Li Zishu, and stars Sung Yun-hua, Yau Sze-chun, and Liu Tzu-chuan.

Sung Yun-hua put in serious effort for the role: she borrowed her costume qipao and took it home for a full month, spending every day in her room getting into character, and also flew to Malaysia ahead of time to experience local life, where she was unexpectedly completely won over by the local bak kut teh.

She also playfully told fans: "Everyone must come to the cinema to see me in a qipao—it's very beautiful." The film received four major nominations at the 63rd Golden Horse Awards and was selected as the opening film of the Golden Horse Film Festival.

When tickets went on sale recently, they sold out in just 5 minutes.

In the film, Sung Yun-hua plays "Du Li'an," whose life spans more than 20 years, from first love and marriage to her relationship with her stepdaughter—making it arguably the most challenging role of her career.

Sung Yun-hua describes Du Li'an as a profound "survivor." To understand the character's state of mind at different stages, she repeatedly studied the original novel and the script, and only on the first day of shooting did she truly feel as if the character had already merged into her body.

She also went to Malaysia nearly a month early to live there and scout locations with the crew, joking that in the past she had always rushed between the airport, hotel, and cinema when visiting the country, but this time she was finally able to get to know Malaysia in depth.
