Can I change the first US flight segment on an AA award ticket while keeping the second segment to Japan unchanged?

AA miles can book business class to Japan, and I often see itineraries where the first segment is a US domestic flight and the second segment is a JAL flight to Japan the next day. That's very inconvenient because you also have to book a hotel for one night at the connecting airport. Could I ticket it first, then call AA customer service to move the first AA flight to the next day, so both flights operate on the same day and it's much more convenient? Has anyone here done this before? Thanks.
