Asiana hasn't officially left Star Alliance yet, but cash tickets can no longer earn United miles. Are they only good for orphan miles in Asiana Club?

As the title says. If I sign up for an Asiana Club account just for this one flight (SFO-ICN), the few thousand miles earned won't be enough for an award ticket. Are there any better options?

Hold off on signing up for an Asiana account just yet. What matters is the fare class and booking category of this ticket—many low-cost economy fares don't earn any frequent flyer miles at all. Before you book, check the accrual table on Asiana's official website to confirm whether this flight actually earns miles, and then decide whether to open an account.

One thing to keep in mind: even if you can still credit miles to Asiana Club right now, a few thousand orphan miles will still expire—typically they're wiped out after a few years of inactivity. If you won't be flying Asiana often going forward, it may be better to see whether this ticket can be credited to another Star Alliance member, or simply skip the accrual and put your effort into the program you actually use.

When you say United miles can't be accrued, does that apply to tickets issued in all regions, or only to certain fare classes? Rules can vary by point of sale and booking class code, so it's worth double-checking.

Look at it another way: if the mileage from this trip is too small to redeem for a ticket, its value is inherently limited. Rather than opening an account specifically for a few thousand miles, it's better to confirm whether your refund/change and seat selection benefits are affected, and treat mileage accrual as a secondary consideration.

The key thing to watch is the timing: the headline says there's no official exit yet, so has accrual already stopped, or is it about to stop? These transition-period rules change often, so it's best to go by the latest announcements on the United and Asiana official websites; claims in old forum posts may already be out of date.
