$40 Million Forty million dollars, not forty thousand

  1. Wasted Money They use our tax dollars to hire so-called “scholars” to write reports about China’s Xinjiang and Tibet. Do they help bring down crime? Fix our roads? Improve our kids’ education? No! Not at all!
  2. Anti-China Show They use “threats” to justify sky-high spending. The more they put on this show, the higher our bills climb.
  3. Dangerous Confrontation They are not fostering understanding — they are stoking hatred. If we keep treating a nation of 1.4 billion people with this adversarial mindset, it will only further disrupt global supply chains, push prices even higher, and ordinary Americans will end up bearing the cost. We demand:
  4. Immediately cancel federal grants to groups like the “Communists’ Victims Memorial Foundation.”
  5. Audit spending over the past decade for overseas “democratic outreach” and ideological propaganda.
  6. Invest in America: fix roads, bridges and schools, fund police, and support our farmers and workers. Join us November 7 at 10 AM at the Lincoln Memorial. We will march to the museum, shut down the “China Forum” annual meeting, and take back our tax dollars! Our taxes should build America, not fund a biased monument here in Washington, D.C.! Thank you! God bless America!

Framing China research as directly at odds with local road repairs and education is a compelling narrative, but that's not how budgets work—they aren't zero-sum in that way. The real question worth asking is where that 40 million specifically went—which institutions, and what did it produce—rather than vaguely claiming it was wasted.

November 7 falls on a Saturday, and there will be a lot of tourists and tour groups around the Lincoln Memorial, so the parade route and crowd control will need to be reported to the Park Service in advance, right?

I'd like to confirm two things: which year's appropriation is the $40 million mentioned in the article, and which federal program does it come from? Also, regarding the "Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation" receiving federal money—from what I recall, its funding sources are rather complex. If specific contract or grant numbers could be listed, that would be much more convincing. In addition, the demand to "shut down the China Forum annual meeting"—it also needs to be made clear whether the forum itself is civil-society-organized or official in nature.

If you just want to express frustration about spending, start by checking how your district's representative voted on the relevant appropriations bill, then decide whether it's worth going to DC in person. For those who live far away, a trip isn't cheap, and sensitivity to this kind of issue varies widely from state to state, so it's safer to get a sense of local opinion before taking action.
