7-person New Year trip to the snow country: Echigo-Yuzawa or Minakami/Gunma?

Humbly asking for some advice: seven of us arrive in Tokyo on the evening of the 31st and fly back to Tokyo on the evening of the 4th. We want to find a snowy place where everyone can have a fun few days. After some research, Minakami/Gunma and Echigo-Yuzawa are still our candidates. Six of the seven don't ski, so we probably won't plan any skiing; during the day we can try other fun snow activities or check out some scenic spots, and at night we'll drink and chat at the Airbnb. Which of these two places would you recommend? We're fine with either driving or the Shinkansen.

Moving around as a group of seven, just the transfers and waiting for trains will be a hassle, and in snow season you'll also need to plan ahead for where to put large luggage on the shinkansen—I'd suggest working out each day's travel time before deciding where to stay.

I actually don't think you necessarily have to choose between the two. You could stay two nights in Yuzawa and do a day trip to the Tanigawa area to see the snow, as long as you don't pack the schedule too full. Also, arriving in Tokyo on the evening of the 31st means that for the New Year period, you'll need to confirm in advance whether many hotels and restaurants will be open—this affects the experience more than which place you pick.

If the six of you aren't skiing, then soaking in the hot springs and snow activities are probably the main focus, right?
