Google Fi adds a Google Play–exclusive 40%+ discount, deadline approaching

What's new: Some Google Play users can get 40% off (a 60% discount) the first line on Unlimited Premium, Unlimited Standard, or Essentials for 12 consecutive months. Compared with the previously flagged Pixel phone 50%-off offer, this makes the first line 10 percentage points cheaper, and the official terms only require you to bring your own phone—not necessarily a Pixel. Flexible is not included.

Cost impact: A single-line Standard drops from $50 to $20/month, and Premium from $65 to $26/month, both before taxes and fees. The credit covers the plan fee and taxes/fees on that line, but not international surcharges, device installments, or device protection.

Eligibility: Only for designated new Fi accounts that arrive via the Google Play promo banner and receive a unique promo code; only the account's first line is discounted. Existing accounts do not qualify, and additional lines will not automatically get the 40% discount, though they may qualify for other promotions. This offer cannot be combined with other promo codes, referral codes, or plan discounts.

Dates: The official terms do not state an announcement or start date; this was first verified as live on October 18, 2026. The promo code must be redeemed by 11:59 PM PST on October 19, 2026, as stated officially.

What to confirm: Check whether the promo banner appears in your Google Play, whether the unique promo code is automatically applied at checkout, and confirm that you are a new account using your own phone. Because the official terms still say "PST" during daylight saving time, it's best not to wait until the last hour. Multi-person plans should also compare: the 40% discount covers only the first line, while the Pixel 50%-off offer can apply to each eligible line and runs through October 31.

If you're thinking about opening a new account just to grab this deal, hold off on ordering for a moment. The two things most likely to trip you up are the promo banner and the single-use promo code — not every Google Play account shows the entry point, and if the code doesn't carry over automatically at checkout, you're in for a hassle. Also, this offer is exclusive to the first line on a new account, so anyone who already has Fi at home can pretty much only look on. And if you're hoping to add a line, do the math carefully: only the first line gets the discount, while the additional lines stay at full price.

The multi-line plan deserves a closer look here: if there's no discount on the second line to begin with, won't the savings from the first line get diluted by the total cost across multiple lines? Especially compared with Pixel's 50% off applied line by line, a household with three or four lines could end up being a completely different calculation.

Shouldn't we double-check the official page to see if this deadline has been updated?

Look at it from another angle—you also have to factor in the hidden costs beyond the sticker price. The promotional period only lasts 12 months, and if you forget to adjust your plan when it ends, your bill jumps straight back to the regular rate—a pretty jarring surprise. On top of that, the code redemption deadline is tight and listed in PST, which works out even later in Eastern Time, so waiting until the last day to redeem is asking for trouble. If you're actually going to use this, note the renewal date now, and while you're at it, confirm that the credit doesn't cover international surcharges or device-related fees—so you're not caught off guard later.
