Can I build a good relationship with Amex by paying a large amount of taxes with the Business Plus?

As the title says, the Platinum and Gold cards have consistently shown 80k and 60k welcome offers. It's property tax season again, and the fee is 2%. In the past I usually paid by check with no fee or opened a new card, but this year there aren't any new cards I want to open. With the Amex Business Plus I basically break even, and I'm thinking a large amount of spending might build a good relationship—maybe next year they'll give me 300k?

From Amex's perspective, does this count as good spending?

A 2% fee eats up most of the rebate, leaving a very thin net return.

From Amex's risk-control perspective, tax payments fall into an identifiable category, and large, recurring amounts are not necessarily viewed as high-quality spending. It's advisable to watch whether this later triggers an FR.

Property tax amounts are usually substantial, and payment processors may impose per-transaction caps or installment limits. Settlement timing can also affect the deadline, so it's best to confirm these details before proceeding.

When the main text says "basically breaking even," does that include the sign-up bonus amortized in, or does it only count everyday rewards?

The logic of building a relationship by making a large tax payment doesn't necessarily hold. Amex places more weight on your long-term spending patterns and repayment history, and a single large transaction may not change its credit decision.

But look at it from another angle: if what you really want is a better sign-up bonus next year, how much does that actually depend on how much you spend on this card this year? Or is your real goal to get a credit limit increase or avoid closing the card?

Start with a small test transaction to confirm the category and that funds arrive, then decide whether to scale up—rules vary by processor in each region.
