Live-in, on-call, plus grocery shopping and cleaning — that's basically cramming a full-time chef and a housekeeper into one role. $8,000 to $12,000 sounds like a lot, but once you factor in being on call around the clock, the hourly rate may not be worth it. If you're genuinely thinking about trying it, first find out exactly how many hours you'd actually work each day, and whether there's a contract and guaranteed rest time. Don't just fixate on the number.

If I get one day off per week, would I still stay at the employer's home on that day?

The expectation of "cooking on demand" can easily escalate into having to get up in the middle of the night. It's best to first clarify the normal meal service hours and how extra meals are handled, otherwise the boundaries will become very blurry.

Live-in private chefs like this are common in Chinese households. The most likely problems aren't about cooking skill, but about working hours, privacy, and constantly changing food preferences. During the interview, it's best to clearly spell out who decides the menu, the grocery budget, and guests' allergies—otherwise, over time, it all turns into endless bickering.

Let's call first to get clear on how the visa and tax filing should be handled before we do anything else.

The pay range is quite wide, which may be related to experience, whether sponsorship is provided, and how often banquets are held. However, the post doesn't mention the contract, insurance, or tax arrangements—these are the key factors determining whether this is sustainable long term. It's best to ask them to clarify these before considering it further.
