AA Award Tickets Booked Through AS Are Really Hard to Change When Flight Disruptions Happen on the Day of Travel

AA often sells tickets with only 40-minute connections in PHX/DFW/LAX, and also makes them available to partners like AS. AA's own dynamic award pricing is often quite a bit more expensive than AS, so I recently booked one using AS.

As it turned out, on the day of travel, the inbound flight for the first segment was delayed. Not long after, the AA app showed delayed and offered free rebooking options. But it would only let me change both segments together, not just one of them, and I couldn't change to another airport in the same city either.

So I contacted AA app chat support. After checking for a while, the agent said they couldn't change a ticket issued by AS and that I needed to contact AS. When I went back, AA had already automatically rebooked it, and my manual rebooking options had disappeared.

The problem is that with this kind of same-day disruption, there's just not much time to deal with it. If the disruption happens a few weeks in advance, you can still ask AS to contact AA to request award space, but trying to sort it out a few hours before departure is a real hassle.

Later I found that AA had released quite a few partner award seats to AS that day, so I simply refunded the original ticket and booked a new one (the AS website doesn't even allow online changes).

It feels like although AS tickets are cheaper and still earn EQM, they're a real pain when flight disruptions happen. Previously, when the ticket was issued by AA, asking AA chat to rebook was always smooth. Once the ticket is issued by AS, both sides start passing the buck. I wonder whether going to the counter could bypass the issuing airline and handle it directly.

Technically, according to the fare rules, AS is the ticketing carrier, but sometimes the AA ground staff on site also have the authority to make changes—it just depends on the person.

Next time you check in directly through the AA app, keep an eye out for the self-service rebooking option. Sometimes it works even when the ticketing carrier is AS, as long as AA hasn't automatically rebooked you. Add your AS frequent flyer number to your AA itinerary in advance—if there's a schedule change, the counter agent may be more willing to help you adjust.

The fact that the manual option disappears after AA auto-rebooks is pretty important—is the app refreshing too fast, or is the system locking it out? A screenshot would probably make it easier to tell.

If your flight changes, go to the AA counter first, but this may not work for international routes or codeshare flights—it's generally easier for domestic U.S. flights.

The real nightmare is when a schedule change happens on the day of travel. You can't get through to Alaska Airlines customer service at all, and the American Airlines counter just passes you off to the ticketing agency. If you're traveling with family and pressed for time, you simply can't afford the hassle. My advice: try to avoid booking tight connections on partner award tickets.
