IHG's $25 F&B credit feels pretty useless

As the title says, you have to charge it to your room to use it, but if they won't let you charge to your room, you can't use it at all. Yesterday I was at the IHG on Page and wanted to buy some water and snacks from the minibar, but they only took card and cash. I feel like IHG's biggest advantage is all those big roadside motels in the Midwest, but a lot of those places aren't very by-the-book, so if you can't use it at many of them, even the $25 FN might not get used.

At high-end places like IC, $25 isn't even enough for one person's breakfast, unless you're back in China, then it's fine...

Some hotels may specify that the F&B credit can't be used for the minibar, so it's best to ask before you use it.

You mentioned that it can only be used if it's charged to your room. So if the front desk says there's a system issue or just flat-out refuses to let you charge it to your room, how do you usually handle that? Do you go find the duty manager on the spot, or do you contact IHG customer service afterward? Also, if you go out of your way to eat at the restaurant just to use that $25, once you factor in the tip and the time, wouldn't it actually end up not being worth it?

You mentioned in your post that many truck stops aren't legit and might not be usable—is that something you've experienced firsthand or just heard about? If it's only from a few individual places, it might not represent the entire Midwest.

Posting to a house account is a hard requirement, and the risk of it going unused is bigger than you'd think.

I don't think you can generalize like that. It's true that the $25 IC credit isn't enough for breakfast, but some big roadside hotels in the Midwest are actually pretty flexible—I've seen ones where you can apply it directly to minibar charges. And as for that place on Page only taking card and cash, that might be down to the specific franchisee's policy rather than an IHG-wide issue. If it really is the way you describe, then the FN plus $25 would indeed be pretty awkward at those hotels.
