The corporate culture really is baked in to the bone.

ads can bring a pid back. Other orgs basically have to supply a pid themselves to recruit someone back.

https://www.reuters.com/investigations/mark-zuckerberg-had-bold-plan-replace-meta-staff-with-ai-heres-how-it-imploded-2026-08-26/

To make its workforce “AI native,” Meta explored slashing the size of many teams across the company by as much as 60% in two waves, internal documents show. Staff revolted - and hours before a big layoff in May, the CEO called off planning for further cuts.

But on the night of May 19, just hours before the first layoff wave, Zuckerberg blinked. Meta laid off 10% of its employees the next day, but it called off planning for the November cuts, according to one internal document reviewed by Reuters.

Planning layoffs half a year in advance — does that fit Zuck's style?

Word on the street is that for the past six months VPs have been battling Zuck over this every day. Of course, no reliable source.

But judging by the outcome, in the end it may have been Chris Cox who wouldn't agree to cut that much.

Could also be E13 who changed his mind at the last minute

Our org cut a few XFNs in May, now the HC is back, and then they reached out to them asking if they'd Boomerang

Seems not many want to come back; AAI is more of a mess, so coming back might be slightly better.

The plan to cut it to 60% sounds a bit exaggerated. The two waves mentioned in the internal document may just be an early proposal, and aren't necessarily the basis for the final decision.

There's a fair bit of confusion over who exactly made the call to halt things at the last minute back in May. Some people point to Chris Cox, while others suspect it was E13. Without more sources, it's hard to say for sure.

Are the rehiring policies for headcount really that different across orgs?

Bringing the PID back sounds easy, but cross-org coordination and approval processes are often where things really get stuck.

Employees are always the last to hear about layoffs—hardly news at big companies. Planning six months ahead and then changing your mind at the last minute both point to the same thing: a huge information gap at the decision-making level. For ordinary people, the best you can do is keep your options open.

Planning half a year in advance only to slam on the brakes at the last minute—it's usually the people waiting for news who end up getting hurt.

If you're thinking about going back to your old company, it's best to first find out whether the headcount in your original team is stable and whether your level and project assignment would change after being rehired. Otherwise, returning could just mean another round of upheaval.
