On Wednesday local time, a Flydubai passenger plane flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Israel, sent out an emergency distress signal en route, drawing intense global attention. The latest reports indicate that the plane has successfully made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, all passengers on board are safe, and follow-up investigations are underway. The flight involved was Flydubai FZ1073, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX. According to Israeli media and aviation websites, when the aircraft was near the Jordan-Saudi border, it transmitted transponder code "7700," indicating a general emergency, then briefly transmitted "7500," used to indicate hijacking or unlawful interference, before switching back to "7700" again. Aviation tracking data showed that the aircraft's altitude once dropped from 30,875 feet to 16,750 feet in just 29 seconds, equivalent to a descent of 4,300 meters in half a minute. It is reported that after the incident occurred, because contact with the aircraft could not be established, Israeli Air Force fighter jets were urgently scrambled. The incident also prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior military officials to conduct an emergency assessment. Subsequently, the relevant parties restored contact with the aircraft. The passenger plane ultimately landed at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia under the escort of Saudi fighter jets. Netanyahu's office responded to the matter, saying: "After learning of an aviation incident that raised concerns, Prime Minister Netanyahu consulted on the matter and is closely monitoring developments. The incident has been brought under control, and all measures are currently being taken to ensure the safe return of Israeli passengers to Israel." As the plane landed safely, outside attention turned to what exactly happened at the time of the incident. According to multiple media reports, the reason for the plane's dive is suspected to be a fight between the pilots, but it is not yet clear why the two fought. The two pilots have been taken away by Saudi authorities for investigation. Preliminary assessments show that the two engaged in a physical altercation, one of whom was Russian/Russian-born and the other Ukrainian/Ukrainian-born. There are also reports that have not been officially confirmed saying that the co-pilot stabbed the captain and tried to seize control of the aircraft, but was subdued by the crew and "other passengers." Other reports say these "passengers" were actually another group of pilots in plain clothes. According to media citing a passenger on board, there was blood inside the cockpit when the door was opened, and one of the pilots had been stabbed with a knife. An anonymous senior Israeli official told the media that if there had not been another group of pilots on the plane at the time, the incident could have turned into another "9/11" attack, or the 1976 Entebbe hostage incident. According to this unnamed official, the co-pilot is under investigation by Saudi authorities, and there are increasing indications that he tried to take over the aircraft in order to crash it. According to multiple Israeli media reports, there is a growing tendency within Israel to believe that the emergency on the flight was an attempted terrorist attack, but no definitive conclusion can yet be made. At the same time, all parties are also studying other possibilities, including a mental health episode.
