Merrill Credit Card Redemption Rules Quietly Changed: 2c/p With No Minimum (Limited Time Until 9/30)

Not sure if anyone still remembers this card—I opened it back then because the card design was pretty. The rule has always been 25k points for a flight ticket worth up to $500, and you had to get as close to $500 as possible to squeeze out 2c/p of value; anything over $500 was only reimbursed at 1c/p. I've been accumulating points for almost ten years and never found a flight ticket that was exactly $500 to redeem. Today I finally had one around $500, so I went in to take a look and noticed this new notice: Fellow forum members with these points, hurry up—this is your chance to maximize point value

Things might work differently here in the US compared to back home when it comes to redeeming airline miles, so we'll need to figure out which airlines are actually available first.

Does this 2c/p with no minimum mean you don't have to hit exactly 500 anymore, and the extra amount is also calculated at 2c?

If I have a ticket over 500, is the excess portion also 2c/p under the new rules, or is it still topped up at 1c/p? Also, this limited-time offer runs until 9/30 — is that based on the booking date or the travel date?

Make sure to allow time for ticket issuance and payment to go through before 9/30—don't wait until the last few days.
