There are tons of Amex offers floating around right now, and all sorts of cards are at all-time highs. But has anyone stopped to consider that we shouldn't be slaves to credit card companies? We shouldn't force ourselves to spend $8k or $12k to hit a sign-up bonus just for 175k MR points that lose value every day and earn no interest. Wouldn't it be better to save that money and invest it? With all that in mind, and considering that some people genuinely can use the Platinum and Gold benefits but don't have that kind of spending coming up anytime soon, we present the 0 welcome offer Platinum and Gold offers, designed to help you break the urge to force spending just to hit a sign-up bonus: "There is no welcome offer available for you at this time. †" Platinum: Platinum Card® - Provide Info Gold: American Express® Gold Card - Provide Info Thank you to the greatest Amex for being so thoughtful about our financial wellbeing

First, figure out whether you'll have any real major expenses in the next six months. If not, don't force it.

That 0 welcome offer link is pretty ironic, but keep in mind it might only show up for some people—not everyone will necessarily get that result. Also, Amex counts the minimum spend based on posting date, and returns, annual fees, and some third-party payments may not count. If you're really going to go for it, you'd better read the terms carefully first, so you don't end up falling short of the spend and getting clawed back.
The MR devaluation is definitely worth thinking through carefully. 175k sounds like a lot, but when you can't get good value out of it, cash back is more practical. And buying things you don't need just to hit the minimum spend means you're essentially locking your money into the credit card system.
