Review of a THC Hotel in a Seattle State Park + Frustrations

Came to Seattle this year for P2's birthday, to use up some FHR/THC credit, but didn't want to squeeze into downtown or pay expensive parking, so I found this place in Kenmore called The Lodge at St. Edward Park. Not far from the city, looked it up and it's inside a state park, also a Michelin recommendation, and the building looked nice, thought it seemed interesting, so booked 4 days total. The THC series can only be booked two nights at a time, each two nights with all fees came to about $900, used up saved FHR, benefits include breakfast, $100 credit, and if rooms are available, early check in, late check out, upgrade, plus hotel valet parking is included in the fee. Split into two bookings for a total of 4 nights. The hotel is SLH, thought I could stack Hilton Diamond, but after booking I looked it up and it seems only booking through Hilton can apply Hilton benefits, booking through Amex can't add them, asked the hotel and Hilton and seems no way, so gave up. Since it was for a birthday and needed to connect the two reservations, emailed the hotel a week in advance, asked to link the two bookings, and mentioned it was for P2's birthday and asked if we could get an upgrade, got a quick reply saying they'd note it and put out some birthday special. Below is the stay experience, North American hotels, can't ask for too much, actually there was some service, but there were always some awkward spots, compared to big chains the standardization is worse, but there's more room for flexibility, so to each their own, just sharing. Followed navigation through the state park to the hotel, the environment is really nice, greenery everywhere, the hotel is converted from an old seminary, the building is nice, has some historic feel, arrived at night, valet service right at the door, but after arriving no help with luggage, took the car and left. Front desk check in said they upgraded the room, then gave the THC paper and that was it, it included the $100 credit and $60 breakfast, written as not including tax and tip. Only after I asked did I learn there was another reservation later, then they blocked it to the same room, and said they couldn't link them, I'd have to come back to the front desk in two days to reactivate the key card, but no need to change rooms, benefits would be given again, meaning the $100 could stack. Also asked about breakfast, was told the restaurant only has formal breakfast on weekends, Monday to Friday only the bar sells some light bites, this breakfast credit feels a bit useless. Entering the room, had to sigh at how small it really was, I booked one level above the base room, but after the upgrade it was still small, don't know how cramped the base room would be, there was a card on the table and some small desserts wishing happy birthday, the hotel amenities are pretty good. The hotel interior is also nice, lots of art exhibitions (for sale), and a small library for everyone to use, with lots of board games and books. At night originally wanted to order some drinks to use up the $100 credit, but after 9pm found all bars closed, don't understand how bars can close so early. And room service hours are only 9am-2pm, 5pm-9pm, what's the difference from the restaurant. The next morning came down to the bar wanting to order breakfast, then the front desk said they weren't open for breakfast today, some bakery was on the table to take freely, really speechless, the front desk said I could save the $60 credit for noon, but I was going out at noon. Casually looked online and saw room service could still be ordered, but the front desk said even if it can be ordered online they have no server so it would be canceled, I didn't believe it and ordered to try, waited half an hour with no sign, called to ask again and was told it should be canceled, the $60 credit could be saved for evening. Then after another half hour someone actually knocked to deliver breakfast, inexplicable but missing the two drinks I ordered, didn't want to argue more, don't know why that day felt so chaotic. The second night came back after 9 again, so thought to order room service early to send a bottle of wine to the room, specially left a note in the order, came back around 9:30, nothing in the room, called the front desk, front desk said they came to deliver but no one so couldn't, and now should be closed, but could ask, I said then ask again and reply to me. So no reply, after half an hour suddenly someone knocked to deliver wine, apologetic and attitude was good. The third morning ordered breakfast again, the bar's light meals finally opened, to be fair the prices are reasonable, $60 is indeed enough, but they got my order wrong again. The hotel sent a message through Amex telling me to go down and change the key card when free, so went to the front desk to change to a new key card, settled the first two days of room charges, FHR/THC daily, credit never calculated right. First, the first day said they wouldn't deliver but did deliver breakfast wasn't charged, then the benefits letter said not including tax and tip, but the bill just brutally subtracted $60 from the total, thought they couldn't tell either, then forgot to subtract the $100, so brutally added it, so in the end made a little on tax and tip? The third night came back a bit earlier and ordered two cocktails at the bar (only three choices on the menu), the bartender charged happy hour price, two for $30 not expensive, but really didn't want to drink. There's a small shop at the hotel entrance selling some daily necessities and souvenirs, the front desk said credit could be used so bought some essentials. The souvenir shop door said take to the front desk to pay, the front desk at first said no it's closed, but then said okay, anyway noted it and let us go. The fourth morning finally got breakfast right, don't know why eating breakfast is so hard. The fourth night came back late after 11, no valet at the entrance at all, had to go in and ask the front desk, the front desk said he could go help park. The last morning finally the weekend, finally had a proper brunch at the restaurant, finally more choices, went to the front desk and got late check out. Then check out came out and it was the front desk from two days ago, of course credit was messed up again, missed one breakfast, then the lady asked me did you stay two days, I really give up. Also this time don't know how the system fixed itself and suddenly excluded tax and tip, really different every day, but the missed breakfast credit was brutally added, and the $100 was indeed automatically given again, the front desk also couldn't calculate but was really easygoing. It's the weekend so took a walk on the trail in St Edward State Park, someone was taking wedding photos, walking through the forest to the lake in the park is really beautiful. In short, the hotel is nice looking, facilities are small but fine, but service is still a bit far from luxury, but after all it's America, overall feeling THC is very unfamiliar, probably few people come to use THC, also a Seattle weekend option to use FHR/THC for a retreat

To take advantage of this kind of credit, it's best to first ask about the actual service hours for the bar and room service.

You mentioned that the front desk said only bookings made through Hilton can stack with Diamond status—so if you book THC through Amex, can you still get any Hilton benefits at all? If you didn't confirm before booking, you're actually in a pretty passive position once you arrive.

Independent hotels in state parks like this one tend to be short-staffed on weekends and during peak versus off-peak seasons, and breakfast and valet are usually the first things to slip. If your schedule is tight, it's best not to pin anything important on the hotel breakfast or a late checkout. The $100 credit is also applied per folio, so with front desk shift changes or systems not syncing, you can end up reconciling the charges over and over. Give yourself an extra half hour at checkout to be safe.

It's understandable if you're not familiar with THC, but if you can't even figure out the breakfast credit, you'll still need to check the final bill.

Small boutique hotels like this often aren't well-versed in loyalty programs, and that's not necessarily a THC-specific issue. Switch to an SLH or independent property under Marriott or Hyatt, and bookings made outside the group's own channels often won't get you member benefits either. So it really comes down to the booking source and how well the hotel itself is trained—execution varies quite a bit from region to region.
